moosewood

this past weekend, i came across an original (and cheap!) copy of moosewood cookbook by mollie katzen. i'd been meaning to add it to my collection for quite some time, as it's essentially the vegetarian bible, so i grabbed it.

the recipes (hand-lettered and illustrated by mollie herself) are straightforward, simple and timeless—all things i appreciate and strive for in my own kitchen. the book is in pretty rough shape (it was published in 1977), but the various stains on the worn pages just signal that it's been well-loved over the years by messy, hands-on cooks.

for my first (of many) recipes made from moosewood cookbook, i kept things easy with standard guacamole. normally, i throw some avocados in a bowl with fresh lime and salt and call it guacamole, but the addition of garlic and lemon in this recipe really made all the difference. i'll never go back to my lazy girl's version again!

what are you reading (offline, that is)?

over on the equals record, drew and i shared some of our favorite reads as of late. click here to find out why i loved joan didion's we tell ourselves stories in order to live, why drew loved patrick dewitt's the sisters brothers and why we both loved elizabeth strout's olive kitteridge. it was so fun to team up and put our heads together for this one!

april rain song

let the rain kiss you.
let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.
let the rain sing you a lullaby.

the rain makes still pools on the sidewalk.
the rain makes running pools in the gutter.
the rain plays a little sleep-song on our roof at night-

and i love the rain.

the perks of being a blogger

after being on the library waiting list for months, i gave up on getting to read this book anytime soon. then, it magically showed up at our apartment. the perks of being a blogger. and having a boyfriend who reads your recent posts. who has amazon prime free two-day shipping. let's see what else magically appears if i post it up here on my little corner of the internet... does amazon carry cats? i think penny needs a feline friend.

covers

just realized that the next three books on my list to read all have one thing in common: attractive covers. though i wouldn't condone judging a book solely by its cover, i'm a sucker for interesting fonts and graphics. a nice bonus when good fiction is matched with such aesthetically pleasing covers!

recent reads

you know i'm on vacation from school when i'm reading for pleasure non-stop. i'm devouring one book that makes me hungry and long for paris, some john keats and walt whitman to "continue my emotional education" (yes, i did just quote love actually), short stories by a current author that i adore, and all of the catalogs from my favorite stores that my mom has been saving for me.

scenes from the weekend

this past weekend can be summed up in two words: live music. it was mfnw (music fest northwest), so there were a lot of local bands + some big names here in town. jill got us invited to a free event put on by opb at mississippi studios with coffee, alcohol, snacks + six live bands. later than night (read: way past my bedtime), we went to see my roommate jeremy play a show with seattle band, the moondoggies. they put on a really great show -- check them out here! on sunday, drew and i indulged in an outdoor brunch at one of our favorite neighborhood eateries in the sunny 90+ degree weather. parasite annoyances aside, it was a truly perfect weekend.

scenes from the weekend

after feeling lousy on friday + saturday, i decided i wasn't going to let my current stomach troubles ruin the entire holiday weekend. on sunday, we drove out to the oregon coast to read on the beach and check out astoria. astoria is home to the house where they filmed the goonies! i (unsuccessfully) tried to convince drew to drive around the town aimlessly looking for it. the town itself is small, but charming. lots of little shops + restaurants that we peeked into before calling it a day.

1. beach.
2. currently reading.
3. cutest little bakery.
4. scrabble sections in a book store.
5. drew loves books.
6. beautiful top of the liberty theater.

scenes from the weekend

well, the past week has been... interesting. a false self-diagnosis of appendicitis lead to a friday night emergency room trip which ultimately lead to a real diagnosis of food poisoning. the doctor said no coffee, alcohol, or foods not included in the brat diet (or all the fun things in life). the highlight of my weekend was giving myself a manicure and the most exotic thing i ate was toast with mashed banana. i was feeling well enough on sunday to walk down to the hawthorne street fair to listen to some live music + enviously watch drew eat delicious food. as of today, i'm still ill -- how long is this food poisoning going to stick around?

1. beginners. i knew i would love this movie. it was incredible!
2. essie's clambake.
3. picked up a copy of the design*sponge summer newspaper.
4. beer ice cream (and salted caramel which i painfully ignored).

6. girl playing keyboard off the back of a bike.
7. mas musica.
8. got that little green polka dot scarf for $1. perfect to wear as a headband!
